President Putin
met with activists who served in his presidential campaign a year ago
and promised to revive a Soviet-era award by the end of Friday. On
Friday morning, in Rostov-on-Don, Putin said, “In the USSR, we had the title ‘Hero of Socialist Labour’, and in my opinion, it was reasonable”. He said this whilst meeting with staffers of the all-Russia People’s Front, who successfully campaigned for his re-election for
a third term. He said that the necessary orders would be in place by
the end of the day to revive the title, which became defunct almost two
decades ago. The Soviets widely-used the award, established under the
rule of Iosif Stalin,
used to honour civilian workers for their labour achievements and to
encourage them to increase their output. The initiative to resurrect the
title Hero of Socialist Labour came out of a previous meeting of the
People’s Front with Putin in December.
